I've been there :) This training enables the body to train at different levels and thus enables the body to gain maximum muscles. It is a compact training schedule in which the intensity factor is punched with the element of surprise for the body. Proper utilization of this technique can give great results. Code word: Slowly but steady - Don't push it!

Supersets

This bodybuilding workout technique deals with doing two exercises without leaving any time gap between them. It stresses and exhausts the required muscles a lot more. It is a good fundamental technique for the professionals and can be used as filler technique as well.

Breathing sets

This technique includes the art of breathing along with exercising. It sandwiches a breathing set between two exercises. It realizes the importance of breathing in exercising and trains both together to get a perfect result. It energizes the body a lot more than the other techniques not mentioned in this article and decreases the fatigue factor.

Meditation Techniques for Kids

It is a known fact that meditation calms a person down, reduces stress and anxiety levels, promotes concentration and leads to an improved health. It is due to this fact that many people are now including meditation in their daily lives and practicing the same with fervor. What is heartening to know is that many kids have now started practicing meditation in their daily lives as well. Are you of the opinion that meditation is an adult's game and that kids can't handle it? That is where you would be wrong. In fact, given the stress, increased competition and pressure that the kids of today face, meditation should not merely be an add-on but a part of their daily routine. Other than reducing stress and anxiety or dealing with any other negative emotion effectively, meditation also helps in building the image of self, dealing with suicidal thoughts and help in dealing with lowered confidence and self-esteem. It has been observed that children who practice meditation regularly are focused, confident and happy.

We know that children might not understand the importance of meditation and how it improves their lives. This they will infer on their own once they have become slightly more mature. So then, it is quite ridiculous to ask a child to meditate by himself and expect that he will be successful at it in the first go. The correct thing to do here is to sit down with them and meditate along with them. Help them understand how it is done. Again, choosing the right kind of meditation techniques for kids is also very important. One needs to find such meditation techniques and poses that will not seem like a task for the kids, but something that they can easily carry forth. Simple techniques which do not seem like tasks is the key to getting the kids to meditate. This is especially true of kids who are very young. In the following section, we will give you a list of certain techniques that you can teach your kid.

Meditation for Kids - The Different Techniques

The following is a table of the varied techniques that you can easily get your child to do. Remember, the child is not going to become an expert the minute he/she starts out on these. You have to find interesting ways to motivate him and keep him at it.

Walking Meditation

This is the simplest technique that you can start out with. Take the child on a walk in nature. Choose something that has a trail and is interesting. Being out in nature amidst the natural surroundings is in itself a very relaxing feeling, but to heighten and enhance that feeling, ask the child to concentrate on his breathing. Ask him to breathe evenly and concentrate on his breathing style. It should go with breathing in and breathing out either 1 or 2 breaths. To channelize the breathing, ask them to swing their arms with an alternate arm and leg movement (right arm-left leg and vice versa). This is a simple exercise which will not only help them relax, but also allow them to enjoy the calming effects of nature.

Deep Breathing

Sit with your child on the floor and maintain an erect position. Instruct the child to breathe in and out using very deep breaths. Tell him to inhale all the way from the stomach and not just the chest region, such that when he takes a breath in, the stomach should expand. Once he inhales, ask him to hold the breath for 2-3 seconds and release. Exhale very slowly and feel the air leave the stomach, then the chest and finally through the nostrils. When the child concentrates on his breathing, it will automatically prevent him from thinking of any other thing and improve concentration as well. Start out with 5 minutes, then slowly increase the time.

Focusing on Objects



This technique can be used on slightly older yoga for flexibility kids. This is a great method to calm the mind and improve focus. Place an object in front of the child at a distance of 2 feet. Then ask him to sit in front of it and simply observe the object. Let's say that you've kept a toy car for the child to observe. Ask him to make a mental note of the physical attributes of the car - what it looks like, the shape and color etc. This seemingly simple exercise improves concentration and helps one meditate deeply.

Corpse Pose (Shavasana)

This is one of the most popular meditation poses. Ask the kid to lie down and simply 'shut off' each body part starting from the toes and moving up to the head. They have to make do as though each body part is slowly sleeping off and the waves of relaxation are sweeping through the entire body. The breathing has to be kept at an even pace during this time. Get them to do this pose for at least 5-8 minutes.

Guided Meditation

Guided meditation is one of the most popular techniques because of the high level of interaction between the guide and child. Ask the child to lie down and try to relax by taking in some deep breaths. Then give the child mental images to think of. Feed the child with sentences like 'Imagine that you're at the beach...you're wading through the water. The waves are splashing against your leg...You can hear the chirping of the seagulls...You can smell the salt in the air.' It has been found that this technique helps the child relax much better because he does not have to draw inward to concentrate but has to listen and follow. Another variation to this technique is that of using visualization in which a person draws a mental image of his happy place, much like guided meditation and helps himself relax. This technique can be best used by slightly older children.

The following is a script from "Mindfulness" which aired on Dec. 14, 2014. Anderson Cooper is the correspondent. Denise Schrier Cetta, producer. Matthew Danowski , editor.

Our lives are filled with distractions -- email, Twitter, texting we're constantly connected to technology, rarely alone with just our thoughts. Which is probably why there's a growing movement in America to train people to get around the stresses of daily life.

It's a practice called "mindfulness" and it basically means being aware of your thoughts, physical sensations, and surroundings.

Tonight, we'll introduce you to the man who's largely responsible for mindfulness gaining traction. His name is Jon Kabat-Zinn and he thinks mindfulness is the answer for people who are so overwhelmed by life, they feel they aren't really living at all.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: There are a lot of different ways to talk about mindfulness, but what it really means is awareness.

Anderson Cooper: Is it being present?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: It is being present. That's exactly what it is.

Anderson Cooper: I don't feel I'm very present in each moment. I feel like every moment I'm either thinking about something that's coming down the road, or something that's been in the past.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: So ultimately all this preparing is for what? For the next moment, like the last moment, like, and then we're dead (laugh) so in a certain way...

"There are a lot of different ways to talk about mindfulness, but what it really means is awareness."

Anderson Cooper: Oh God, this is depressing.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Are we going to experience while we're still alive? We're only alive now.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, is an MIT-trained scientist who's been practicing mindfulness for 47 years. Back in 1979, he started teaching mindfulness through meditation to people suffering from chronic pain and illness. That program is now used in more than 700 hospitals worldwide.

Anderson Cooper: So how can you be mindful in your daily life?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: When your alarm goes off and you jump out of bed, what is the nature of the mind in that moment? Are you already like, "oh my God," your calendar pops into your mind and you're driven already, or can you take a moment and just lie in bed and just feel your body breathing. And remember, "oh yeah, brand new day and I'm still alive." So, I get out of bed with awareness, brush my teeth with awareness. When you're in the shower next time check and see if you're in the shower.

Anderson Cooper: What do you mean check and see if you're in the shower?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Well, you may not be. You may be in your first meeting at work. You may have 50 people in the shower with you.

Kabat-Zinn says mindfulness takes practice...a lot of people start with a training class to learn how to meditate.

He agreed to teach us at a weekend retreat on a remote mountaintop in northern California.

When we arrived we were told there would be no television to watch, no Internet, not even an alarm clock.

[Congressman Ryan: So I'm checking in.]

The retreat was full of professionals - neuroscientists, business leaders, Silicon Valley executives.

Before we began we all had to surrender our last ties to the outside world.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Put your devices in the basket. I'm contributing my MacBook Air and my iPhone. Happily.

I wasn't exactly happy to give up my phone. I usually check emails several times an hour.

[Kabat-Zinn ringing a bell.]

Jon Kabat-Zinn: So let's take a few minutes and just settle into an erect and dignified posture.

The retreat lasted three days and most of that time was spent just sitting there, silently meditating - with occasional guidance from Kabat-Zinn.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: There's no place to go. There's nothing to do. We're just asking you to sit and know that you are sitting.

Knowing that you're sitting may sound simple...turns out...it's not. The mind constantly wanders.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: The mind has a life of its own. It goes here and there.

To not get lost in thought, Kabat-Zinn recommended focusing on the sensation of breathing in and out.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Can we actually ride with full awareness on the waves of the breath -- at the belly, at the nostrils and the chest. And then simply rest here in awareness.

"Resting in awareness" is one of those phrases used a lot by people who practice mindfulness. But when I tried to do it, it wasn't restful and I worried I wasn't doing it right. I kept thinking about work.

Anderson Cooper: I miss my cell phone. I'm having withdrawal, I must say.

Kabat-Zinn, who has written 10 books on mindfulness and led nearly a hundred retreats, describes meditation as a mental workout.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: The mind wanders away from the breath and then you gently and nonjudgmentally just bring it back.

Anderson Cooper: So it's okay that the mind drifts away but you just bring it back.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: It's the nature of the mind to drift away. The mind is like the Pacific Ocean, it waves. And mindfulness has been shown to drop underneath the waves. If you drop underneath the agitation in the mind, into your breath deep enough calmness, gentle undulations.

After hours of meditating in 30-minute sessions it does get easier. Those waves of thought Kabat-Zinn described - they're still there but you get less distracted by them.

At breakfast, we spent time relearning some of the very basic things in life - including how to eat food. Eating a meal in complete silence is a little awkward, but without conversation as a distraction...you taste more and eat less.

This is something called "walking meditation." The goal is to learn to be aware of each and every movement and feeling. I know it seems ridiculous, but it does change the way you experience walking.

Anderson Cooper: That's an ancient saying?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: When you're walking, just walk. When you're eating, just eat. Not in front of the TV, not with the newspaper. It turns out, that's huge.

Congressman Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat, says mindfulness might look a lot like nothing, but he really believes it can change America for the better.

He attended his first meditation retreat in 2008, just days after winning a grueling reelection campaign.

"When you're walking, just walk. When you're eating, just eat. Not in front of the TV, not with the newspaper. It turns out, that's huge."

But being mindful at a retreat is one thing, we wondered if, back in Washington, Congressman Ryan ever worries about how all this looks...

Tim Ryan: Well, you know, I can see myself in high school going, "Whoa. Stay away from those guys." (laugh)

Anderson Cooper: So, how do you use it here on Capitol Hill?

Tim Ryan: I'm on the budget committee, for example. There's a lot of conflict. And people say things that get you ramped up. I find myself, as my body clenches up when somebody says something that I know is wrong or I-- I wanna catch them in a lie or whatever, that just, "Calm down. When it's your turn, you make your point."

Tim Ryan: Hey man.]

You don't hear the words "calm" and "Congress" together very often, but Ryan is trying to change that. He hosts weekly meditation sessions open to members and staff of both parties.

[Mindfulness leader: Now shifting the attention to take in the entire body.]

Anderson Cooper: Have you gotten any Republican Congressmen in to meditate with you yet?

Tim Ryan: No. [laugh] We're working on it.



He's written a book about mindfulness and obtained a million dollars of federal funding to teach it to school children in his Ohio district.

Girl: I feel like we are calm right now.

Tim Ryan: Yes you are.]

Tim Ryan: I've seen it transform classrooms. I've seen it heal veterans. I've seen what it does to individuals who have really high chronic levels of stress and how it has helped their body heal itself. I wouldn't be willing to stick my neck out this far if I didn't think this is "The Thing" that can really help shift the country.

Anderson Cooper: To some people though this may sound like kind of New Age gobbledygook?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Yeah, there's so many different compelling studies that are showing that this not New Age gobbledygook, this is potentially transformative of our health and well-being psychologically as well as physically. It can be useful for anxiety, depression, stress reduction.

There have been a number of studies that show mindfulness can lead to those benefits, as well as improvements in memory and attention.

And, at the University of Massachusetts, Judson Brewer, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist, uses mindfulness to treat addiction.

Judson Brewer: This is just the next generation of exercise. We've got the physical, you know, exercise components down. And now it's about working out how can we actually train our minds.

Dr. Brewer is trying to understand how mindfulness can alter the functioning of the brain.

He uses a cap lined with 128 electrodes.

Judson Brewer: We going to start filling each of these 128 wells with conduction gel.

The electrodes are able to pick up signals from the posterior cingulate, part of a brain network linked to memory and emotion.

Judson Brewer: This is all just picking up electrical signal from the top of your head.

Since attending the mindfulness retreat, I'd been meditating daily and was curious to see if it had an impact on my brain.

Judson Brewer: We're going to have you start with thinking of something that was very anxiety provoking for you.

Anderson Cooper: OK.

When I thought about something stressful, the cells in my brain's posterior cingulate immediately started firing -- shown by the red lines that went off the chart on the computer screen.

Judson Brewer: Just drop into meditation.

Anderson Cooper: OK.

When I let go of those stressful thoughts, and re-focused on my breath...within seconds the brain cells that had been firing quieted down -- shown by the blue lines on the computer.

Anderson Cooper: That's really fascinating to see it like that.

Dr. Brewer believes everyone can train their brains to reach that blue, mindfulness zone, but he says, all the technology we're surrounded by makes it difficult.

Judson Brewer: If you look at people out on the street, if you look at people at restaurants, nobody's having conversations anymore. They're sitting at dinner looking at their phone, because their brain is so addicted to it.

Anderson Cooper: You really think there's something in the brain that's addicted to that?

Judson Brewer: Well, it's the same reward pathways as addiction, absolutely.

Anderson Cooper: I'm on mobile devices all day long. I feel like I could go through an entire day and not be present.

Judson Brewer: And what's that like?

Anderson Cooper: It's exhausting.

Judson Brewer: So all of this is leading to a societal exhaustion.

The irony is, many of the people responsible for creating the gadgets that distract us are themselves practicing mindfulness. More than 2,000 people from companies like Google, Facebook and Instagram showed up earlier this year in San Francisco for a mindfulness conference called Wisdom 2.0.

Karen May is a Google vice president, and that's Chade-Meng Tan a former engineer whose become kind of a mindfulness guru. And as could only happen at a place like Google, his actual title is "Jolly Good Fellow."

Anderson Cooper: I've heard that at some meetings at Google you actually start out with moments of silence.

Karen May: We do.

Anderson Cooper: How long yoga flow do sit there quietly for?

Karen May: It's literally a minute or two of noticing your breathing, calming yourself down, being present. And then you're able to go into the meeting, the business at hand, with a little bit more focus.

Anderson Cooper: Does it make people more productive?

Chade-Meng Tan: Yes, it does. When the mind is un-agitated, when the mind is calm, that mind is most conducive to creative problem solving.

Anderson Cooper: --to innovate?

Chade-Meng Tan: Correct. And one of the powers of mindfulness is the ability to get to that frame of mind on demand.

Chade-Meng Tan: In the middle of stress, when everything is falling apart. You can take one breath.

Anderson Cooper: I can imagine some people rolling their eyes and saying, "Oh, come on, of course, like, you know, at Google, you guys have tons of money, there's massage therapists walking around and all sorts of nice things for employees, but it just doesn't seem practical."

Karen May: The advantage of this is it actually doesn't cost anything and it doesn't take much time.

Anderson Cooper: And you believe it really works?

Karen May: I absolutely believe it works.

After nearly four decades of teaching mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn is happy to see it hitting the mainstream. But if you're starting to think mindfulness is something you should start practicing, he says you may be missing the point.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: It's not a big should. It's not like, "Oh I gotta, now one more thing that I have to put in my life. Now I have to be mindful."

Anderson Cooper: And if it becomes that one more thing they gotta do after they take the yoga class?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: They shouldn't do it. Just don't do it. Don't do it. It's not a doing at all, in fact, it's a being. And being doesn't take any time.

Singer-songwriter Jewel used self-taught meditation to help cope with rough childhood and anxiety

Multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated artist Jewel said she developed a mindfulness meditation practice on her own at a young age to help cope with a tough childhood, homelessness as a teen and even pitfalls in her music career.

"I just started habitually forcing myself to do what I call my 'anecdotal thought,'" Jewel told ABC's Dan Harris on his "10% Happier" podcast. "So when I would have anxious feeling, I would retract the thought, I would see what the lie was, what my brain was telling me and I would tell myself the truth.

"And the truth was," she continued. "I am capable of learning and I will learn more today, and that calmed my anxiety down and helped me re-wire and ... that started creating reliance."

Jewel, whose full name is Jewel Kilcher, is known for her soft, poetic hits such a "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant For Me," and "Foolish Games," songs that dominated the radio airwaves in the '90s. Her debut album, "Pieces of You," sold over 12 million copies and became an inspiration for several other female artists.

She reinvented herself as a pop artist with her 2003 album, "0304," then as a country singer with her 2008 album, "Perfectly Clear." Her last album, "Picking Up the Pieces," was released in 2015.

Growing up in Alaska, Jewel was raised in a family of musicians. She said her mother and father would perform at hotels for tourists, but when she was eight years old, her parents divorced and she stepped in to sing with her father as a duo.

"I was probably the only fourth grader that went right from the elementary school to the bar," she said. "And I watched how people handled pain. I watched people use relationships, drugs, alcohol to try to numb and medicate feelings...and I was like, 'I'm in trouble.'"

As a young girl, Jewel said she quickly realized she couldn't run from the pain and turned to writing down her feelings as a way to calm herself down.

"[Writing] was my first mindfulness practice," she said. "I noticed every time I sat down to write, I felt calmer, I felt less anxiety, and it took the edge off just enough."



"I had plenty of anxiety," Jewel continued. "But the anxiety lessened every time I wrote and later as I developed this practice of writing, it was like having breadcrumbs back to my real self... I was always able to see the truth when I wrote."

In her 2015 memoir, "Never Broken -- Songs Are Only Half the Story," Jewel goes into great detail about her tumultuous family upbringing, including that her father, a Vietnam veteran who she said suffered from PTSD, drank and became abusive after her mother left.

Jewel said her father, Atz Kilcher -- who she said gave her permission to publicly discuss his problems -- later got sober and they reconciled. She remains estranged from her mother.

At the age of 15, Jewel moved away from home and tried to start a new life for herself, what she dubbed her "happiness project." She put herself through school, attending a fine arts high school in Michigan on a vocal scholarship.

"I knew statistically kids like me end up repeating the cycles that they're raised by," she said. "So I knew statistically I was going to end up in a ditch or on a pole or on drugs or in an abusive relationship in short order, because that was the emotional language I was taught."

While at school, Jewel said she didn't have enough money to return to Alaska so she began hitchhiking across the country. She learned to play the guitar and kept writing along the way.

"I started writing lyrics about what I was seeing around me and 'Who Will Save Your Soul' was the first song I actually ever wrote. I wrote that when I was 16, as I was hopping trains and hobo-ing and street singing," Jewel said. "I noticed this idea of people wanting to be a victim and saying, 'Somebody else save me,' and I started asking this question, 'how do I save myself?'"

At age 16, Jewel said she started suffering from panic attacks. By the time she was 18, she was homeless and at one point, she said she became so sick from kidney infections she nearly died.

She said she also started shoplifting, until one day she had a moment of clarity.

"I was [looking] in the mirror in a dressing room, trying to steal a dress, and I looked at myself and I went, 'oh I failed. I'm a statistic. I didn't beat the odds, at 15 I set out to not be a statistic, and three short years later my life came to a grinding halt,'" Jewel said. "So I went back to my -- the word 'mindfulness' wasn't even around back then, but I went back to this idea of how can I ... re-wire my brain."



She said she went back to her journals and very consciously began monitoring her thought process that would lead to negative thoughts or lead her to want to steal. Jewel said that self-conscious exercise eventually inspired her to write another hit song, "Hands."

"I started watching my hands because your hands are the servants of your thoughts," she said. "If you want to see what you're thinking just watch what your hands are doing."

To deal with her panic attacks, Jewel said she came up with her own visualization exercises to help reduce her anxiety.

"I learned to do this meditation where I imagined I was on a very stormy ocean," she said. "I'd imagine myself sinking through the ocean, allowing myself to relax, I would get calmer. I would notice the color of the ocean change. I'd notice the taste of salt on my lips. I'd notice the rays of sunlight coming in and the further I got down to the sandy floor, it got calm, it got tranquil by then, and I would look up at the stormy surface and it was in the distance."

Today, Jewel has turned many of the mindfulness exercises she taught herself over the years into what she calls "modules" on her JewelNeverBroken.com website, where she tries to help other people learn healthy mental fitness habits.

Although she said she'll never stop writing music, Jewel said she's "not as interested in touring" because she wants to work on building her mindfulness platform and being a mother to her five-year-old son, Kase.

"I don't want to look back on my life and go, 'my art is my best art,'" she said. "I want my life to be my best work of art."

Donald Trump is set to have a new man in London.

The president has nominated Woody Johnson, the billionaire owner of the New York Jets American football team, as US ambassador to Britain.

Like Mr Trump, the 70-year-old hails from New Yorker and comes from a wealthy family. As the owner of the NFL team, he has garnered a reputation for working behind the scenes - a crucial trait for his new job.

What's his experience?

In the announcement, the White House cited Mr Johnson's asset management firm The Johnson Company and his 16 years of being the chairman and CEO of the Jets.

The billionaire, whose great grandfather founded medical supplies manufacturer Johnson & Johnson, has also served on the president's Export Council and the President's Commission on the White House Fellows.

The White House also noted he founded Lupus Research Alliance, the largest non-proft organisation dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of lupus.



Mr Johnson already knows Sir Kim Darroch, the British ambassador to Washington. When it first emerged in January that the Jets owner was tipped for the post, Sir Kim congratulated him by saying he would succeed in London just as the Jets had done against the Miami Dolphins at Wembley in 2015.

Yoga, Meditation Benefit Both Brain and Body

Research shows that yoga and meditation reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

Though the practices of yoga and meditation have their roots in ancient cultures, they've both become modern day movements. More than 20 million Americans meditate regularly, according to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey. More than 13 million do yoga.

To explore the health benefits of meditation and yoga, Dr. Richard Besser, chief health and medical correspondent for ABC News, hosted a tweet chat Tuesday. He invited experts from top hospitals and research centers, including the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the University of Wisconsin, the Cleveland Clinic and Harvard Medical School, as well as respected yoga authorities from the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, Mass., and West Hartford Yoga in Connecticut.

What is meditation and what does the science say about its benefits for the brain and body?

Many forms of meditation evolved from ancient religious and spiritual traditions, said the NCCAM. Although practices vary today, most meditation techniques aim to train attention and awareness to help bring thoughts under control.

Studies show how helpful a regular meditation practice can be for relieving pain, anxiety and stress. Although a series of University of Wisconsin studies have found meditation can benefit patients with chronic inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, more research is needed to understand its role in the treatment of chronic health conditions.

What is yoga and how can a regular practice help me keep healthy?

There are more than 200 schools of yoga taught throughout the world. All of them aim to connect the mind and body through careful breathing and movement.

As with meditation, studies find that regularly doing downward dogs and warrior poses can help manage stress and anxiety. There's even some evidence that yoga can help fight cancer-related fatigue, manage high-blood pressure and ease chronic pain, especially joint pain. For example, studies by the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle found that after several weeks of taking yoga classes, subjects reported fewer backaches and greater lower-back mobility.

Any advice for yoga newbies?



Don't let an instructor push you past your comfort zone. Listen to your body. All our experts agreed that the most important advice for yogis at any level. If you've got any sort of chronic medical condition, are pregnant or haven't done any sort of exercise in a while, it's a good idea to check in with your doctor before taking up a yoga practice.



For people who are stressed out by tragic events in the news like the tornado that ripped through the Moore, Okla., can meditating help?

Since meditation - and yoga for that matter - promote relaxation, it can definitely help manage the emotions that bubble up after hearing bad or disturbing news. There's some evidence that a few moments of quiet reflection is especially helpful for people who suffer from anxiety and depression to begin with. And the group dynamic of a yoga class can bring people together and not feel so alone after a tragedy.

Angry India moves to patent yoga poses.

New Delhi, Feb.23 (ANI): India has set up a team of Hindu gurus and

200 scientists to identify all ancient yoga positions or asanas and

register each one to stop "patent pirates" from stealing its

"traditional knowledge".



So far, they have added 600 asanas to India's Traditional

Knowledge Digital Library to stop so-called gurus in the United States

and Europe patenting established poses as their own, reports The

Telegraph.



Attempts by mostly American yoga teachers to patent yoga moves from

their classes as their own originals has angered India.



Since its arrival in Britain and America in the late 1960s and

early 1970s, when it was popularised by Beatles guitarist George

Harrison, among others, Yoga has become a 225 billion dollar industry.



In India, however, it remains collective knowledge - practiced in

public parks where gurus often teach fast breathing exercises, like

pranayam, and different 'sun-salutations,' free of charge.





But as the number of Western yoga teachers has grown, there has

been a steady increase in patent applications claiming each pose in

their class is not part of the ancient discipline of mind and body, but

their own unique invention.



In the United States alone, there have been more than 130

yoga-related patents, 150 copyrights and 2,300 trademarks.





Now India's Traditional Knowledge Digital Library is being

made available to patents offices throughout the world so they can

establish whether the claim is a genuine innovation or "prior

art" from Indian systems of medicine.



So far a team of yoga gurus from nine schools have worked with

government officials and 200 scientists from the Council of Scientific

and Industrial Research (CSIR) to scan 35 ancient texts including the

Hindu epics, the Mahabharata and the Bhagwad Gita, and Patanjali's

Yoga Sutras to register each native pose. (ANI)

The following is a script from "Mindfulness" which aired on Dec. 14, 2014. Anderson Cooper is the correspondent. Denise Schrier Cetta, producer. Matthew Danowski , editor.

Our lives are filled with distractions -- email, Twitter, texting we're constantly connected to technology, rarely alone with just our thoughts. Which is probably why there's a growing movement in America to train people to get around the stresses of daily life.

It's a practice called "mindfulness" and it basically means being aware of your thoughts, physical sensations, and surroundings.

Tonight, we'll introduce you to the man who's largely responsible for mindfulness gaining traction. His name is Jon Kabat-Zinn and he thinks mindfulness is the answer for people who are so overwhelmed by life, they feel they aren't really living at all.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: There are a lot of different ways to talk about mindfulness, but what it really means is awareness.

Anderson Cooper: Is it being present?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: It is being present. That's exactly what it is.

Anderson Cooper: I don't feel I'm very present in each moment. I feel like every moment I'm either thinking about something that's coming down the road, or something that's been in the past.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: So ultimately all this preparing is for what? For the next moment, like the last moment, like, and then we're dead (laugh) so in a certain way...

"There are a lot of different ways to talk about mindfulness, but what it really means is awareness."

Anderson Cooper: Oh God, this is depressing.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Are we going to experience while we're still alive? We're only alive now.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, is an MIT-trained scientist who's been practicing mindfulness for 47 years. Back in 1979, he started teaching mindfulness through meditation to people suffering from chronic pain and illness. That program is now used in more than 700 hospitals worldwide.

Anderson Cooper: So how can you be mindful in your daily life?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: When your alarm goes off and you jump out of bed, what is the nature of the mind in that moment? Are you already like, "oh my God," your calendar pops into your mind and you're driven already, or can you take a moment and just lie in bed and just feel your body breathing. And remember, "oh yeah, brand new day and I'm still alive." So, I get out of bed with awareness, brush my teeth with awareness. When you're in the shower next time check and see if you're in the shower.

Anderson Cooper: What do you mean check and see if you're in the shower?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Well, you may not be. You may be in your first meeting at work. You may have 50 people in the shower with you.

Kabat-Zinn says mindfulness takes practice...a lot of people start with a training class to learn how to meditate.

He agreed to teach us at a weekend retreat on a remote mountaintop in northern California.

When we arrived we were told there would be no television to watch, no Internet, not even an alarm clock.

[Congressman Ryan: So I'm checking in.]

The retreat was full of professionals - neuroscientists, business leaders, Silicon Valley executives.

Before we began we all had to surrender our last ties to the outside world.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Put your devices in the basket. I'm contributing my MacBook Air and my iPhone. Happily.

I wasn't exactly happy to give up my phone. I usually check emails several times an hour.

[Kabat-Zinn ringing a bell.]

Jon Kabat-Zinn: So let's take a few minutes and just settle into an erect and dignified posture.

The retreat lasted three days and most of that time was spent just sitting there, silently meditating - with occasional guidance from Kabat-Zinn.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: There's no place to go. There's nothing to do. We're just asking you to sit and know that you are sitting.

Knowing that you're sitting may sound simple...turns out...it's not. The mind constantly wanders.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: The mind has a life of its own. It goes here and there.

To not get lost in thought, Kabat-Zinn recommended focusing on the sensation of breathing in and out.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: Can we actually ride with full awareness on the waves yoga for health of the breath -- at the belly, at the nostrils and the chest. And then simply rest here in awareness.

"Resting in awareness" is one of those phrases used a lot by people who practice mindfulness. But when I tried to do it, it wasn't restful and I worried I wasn't doing it right. I kept thinking about work.



Anderson Cooper: I miss my cell phone. I'm having withdrawal, I must say.

Kabat-Zinn, who has written 10 books on mindfulness and led nearly a hundred retreats, describes meditation as a mental workout.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: The mind wanders away from the breath and then you gently and nonjudgmentally just bring it back.

Anderson Cooper: So it's okay that the mind drifts away but you just bring it back.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: It's the nature of the mind to drift away. The mind is like the Pacific Ocean, it waves. And mindfulness has been shown to drop underneath the waves. If you drop underneath the agitation in the mind, into your breath deep enough calmness, gentle undulations.

After hours of meditating in 30-minute sessions it does get easier. Those waves of thought Kabat-Zinn described - they're still there but you get less distracted by them.

At breakfast, we spent time relearning some of the very basic things in life - including how to eat food. Eating a meal in complete silence is a little awkward, but without conversation as a distraction...you taste more and eat less.

This is something called "walking meditation." The goal is to learn to be aware of each and every movement and feeling. I know it seems ridiculous, but it does change the way you experience walking.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: The Zen people from Ancient China, "When you're walking, just walk." It turns out to be the hardest thing.

Anderson Cooper: That's an ancient saying?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: When you're walking, just walk. When you're eating, just eat. Not in front of the TV, not with the newspaper. It turns out, that's huge.

Congressman Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat, says mindfulness might look a lot like nothing, but he really believes it can change America for the better.

He attended his first meditation retreat in 2008, just days after winning a grueling reelection campaign.

"When you're walking, just walk. When you're eating, just eat. Not in front of the TV, not with the newspaper. It turns out, that's huge."

But being mindful at a retreat is one thing, we wondered if, back in Washington, Congressman Ryan ever worries about how all this looks...

Tim Ryan: Well, you know, I can see myself in high school going, "Whoa. Stay away from those guys." (laugh)

Anderson Cooper: So, how do you use it here on Capitol Hill?

Tim Ryan: I'm on the budget committee, for example. There's a lot of conflict. And people say things that get you ramped up. I find myself, as my body clenches up when somebody says something that I know is wrong or I-- I wanna catch them in a lie or whatever, that just, "Calm down. When it's your turn, you make your point."

[Ryan in Congress

Tim Ryan: Hey man.]

You don't hear the words "calm" and "Congress" together very often, but Ryan is trying to change that. He hosts weekly meditation sessions open to members and staff of both parties.

[Mindfulness leader: Now shifting the attention to take in the entire body.]

Anderson Cooper: Have you gotten any Republican Congressmen in to meditate with you yet?

Tim Ryan: No. [laugh] We're working on it.

He's written a book about mindfulness and obtained a million dollars of federal funding to teach it to school children in his Ohio district.

Girl: I feel like we are calm right now.

Tim Ryan: Yes you are.]

Tim Ryan: I've seen it transform classrooms. I've seen it heal veterans. I've seen what it does to individuals who have really high chronic levels of stress and how it has helped their body heal itself. I wouldn't be willing to stick my neck out this far if I didn't think this is "The Thing" that can really help shift the country.

Anderson Cooper: To some people though this may sound like kind of New Age gobbledygook?



Jon Kabat-Zinn: Yeah, there's so many different compelling studies that are showing that this not New Age gobbledygook, this is potentially transformative of our health and well-being psychologically as well as physically. It can be useful for anxiety, depression, stress reduction.

There have been a number of studies that show mindfulness can lead to those benefits, as well as improvements in memory and attention.

And, at the University of Massachusetts, Judson Brewer, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist, uses mindfulness to treat addiction.

Judson Brewer: This is just the next generation of exercise. We've got the physical, you know, exercise components down. And now it's about working out how can we actually train our minds.

Dr. Brewer is trying to understand how mindfulness can alter the functioning of the brain.

He uses a cap lined with 128 electrodes.

Judson Brewer: We going to start filling each of these 128 wells with conduction gel.

The electrodes are able to pick up signals from the posterior cingulate, part of a brain network linked to memory and emotion.

Judson Brewer: This is all just picking up electrical signal from the top of your head.

Since attending the mindfulness retreat, I'd been meditating daily and was curious to see if it had an impact on my brain.

Judson Brewer: We're going to have you start with thinking of something that was very anxiety provoking for you.

Anderson Cooper: OK.

When I thought about something stressful, the cells in my brain's posterior cingulate immediately started firing -- shown by the red lines that went off the chart on the computer screen.

Judson Brewer: Just drop into meditation.

Anderson Cooper: OK.

When I let go of those stressful thoughts, and re-focused on my breath...within seconds the brain cells that had been firing quieted down -- shown by the blue lines on the computer.

Anderson Cooper: That's really fascinating to see it like that.

Dr. Brewer believes everyone can train their brains to reach that blue, mindfulness zone, but he says, all the technology we're surrounded by makes it difficult.

Judson Brewer: If you look at people out on the street, if you look at people at restaurants, nobody's having conversations anymore. They're sitting at dinner looking at their phone, because their brain is so addicted to it.

Anderson Cooper: You really think there's something in the brain that's addicted to that?

Judson Brewer: Well, it's the same reward pathways as addiction, absolutely.

Anderson Cooper: I'm on mobile devices all day long. I feel like I could go through an entire day and not be present.

Judson Brewer: And what's that like?

Anderson Cooper: It's exhausting.

Judson Brewer: So all of this is leading to a societal exhaustion.

The irony is, many of the people responsible for creating the gadgets that distract us are themselves practicing mindfulness. More than 2,000 people from companies like Google, Facebook and Instagram showed up earlier this year in San Francisco for a mindfulness conference called Wisdom 2.0.

Karen May is a Google vice president, and that's Chade-Meng Tan a former engineer whose become kind of a mindfulness guru. And as could only happen at a place like Google, his actual title is "Jolly Good Fellow."

Chade-Meng Tan: Which nobody can deny.

Anderson Cooper: So, what does a Jolly Good Fellow do?

Chade-Meng Tan: My job description is to enlighten minds, open hearts and create world peace.

Anderson Cooper: That's your job description?

Chade-Meng Tan: That's my job description.

Anderson Cooper: I've heard that at some meetings at Google you actually start out with moments of silence.

Karen May: We do.

Anderson Cooper: How long do sit there quietly for?

Karen May: It's literally a minute or two of noticing your breathing, calming yourself down, being present. And then you're able to go into the meeting, the business at hand, with a little bit more focus.

Anderson Cooper: Does it make people more productive?

Chade-Meng Tan: Yes, it does. When the mind is un-agitated, when the mind is calm, that mind is most conducive to creative problem solving.

Anderson Cooper: --to innovate?

Chade-Meng Tan: Correct. And one of the powers of mindfulness is the ability to get to that frame of mind on demand.

So along with their free health clubs and other company perks...Google now offers their 52,000 employees free lessons in mindfulness.

Chade-Meng Tan: In the middle of stress, when everything is falling apart. You can take one breath.

Anderson Cooper: I can imagine some people rolling their eyes and saying, "Oh, come on, of course, like, you know, at Google, you guys have tons of money, there's massage therapists walking around and all sorts of nice things for employees, but it just doesn't seem practical."

Karen May: The advantage of this is it actually doesn't cost anything and it doesn't take much time.

Anderson Cooper: And you believe it really works?

Karen May: I absolutely believe it works.

After nearly four decades of teaching mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn is happy to see it hitting the mainstream. But if you're starting to think mindfulness is something you should start practicing, he says you may be missing the point.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: It's not a big should. It's not like, "Oh I gotta, now one more thing that I have to put in my life. Now I have to be mindful."

Anderson Cooper: And if it becomes that one more thing they gotta do after they take the yoga class?

Jon Kabat-Zinn: They shouldn't do it. Just don't do it. Don't do it. It's not a doing at all, in fact, it's a being. And being doesn't take any time.
